She continued nurturing her musical interests, and played percussion when she joined her junior high school symphonic band. Majoring in percussion at Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, Japan, Yamazaki studied classical music both in high school and in college. After graduating, she started performing live at music clubs as a vibraphonist around the Tokyo area, in a duo as well as in a self-formed quartet. As a performer, Yamazaki has been playing the vibraphone, marimba, and the taiko drum at various venues for a wide range of audiences, from nursery schools to high school groups; and from children’s homes to retirement homes. In addition, Yamazaki is actively involved in music instruction, currently instructing taiko drums and ensemble music at the kindergarten and nursery school levels, as well as teaching wind-instrument music to elementary, junior and senior high school students. She also has experience in music education, having taught music instruction to music teachers from the elementary to high school levels. Yamazaki has performed the vibraphone for several musical albums. As a leader, she has released albums on CD: “Here goes!” (December, 2011), “Departure!!” (July, 2014), and “Go for it !!!” (July, 2017). She recorded her own music for the three CDs, and the third one “Go for it !!!” features jazz saxophonist Eric Marienthal. The concept of her music CDs is to expand the energy of love and the joy of music, through her original music. For Yamasaki, music is her calling. Yamazaki has performed for Japanese TV programs, including song shows on Japan’s national public broadcasting network, NHK, and performed the vibraphone, marimba, and classical percussion instruments solo, as well as in an ensemble. She also pens short articles for her own music-themed column in a newspaper in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Yamazaki is an active member of The Bamboo Orchestra, playing self-created percussion instruments crafted from bamboo. The group has twice performed at the Arts Midwest World Fest in the US. The Bamboo Orchestra has performed and held workshops in nine states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Finally, in 2018, Yamazaki began endorsing MalletKAT, an electronic vibraphone, produced by Alternate Mode Japan: https://www.alternatemodejp.com/malletkat.html HP http://trill.jp (English version by courtesy of Kathryn Zidonis Dilenschneider) |
